Scabies

Scabies is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (a mite which lays its eggs under the skin surface). Condoms do not protect you against scabies.

Signs and symptoms

  • Itching.
  • A rash on the genitals, knees, buttocks, waistline, hands, wrists, and between the fingers.
  • Silvery lines where the mite has burrowed.

Risk factors

Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person and oral, anal and vaginal sex.

Treatment

Prescription anti-scabies lotions. All bed linen, towels and clothing must be washed in hot water and dried well. The itch often lasts for four weeks after successful treatment.

Prevention

Condoms and dams do not protect against scabies.
